The forum, titled "Charting the Future with Responsible Platinum," brought together industry experts, leaders, and key institutions to discuss how the sector can move toward more responsible and sustainable practices.
One of the key moments of the event was the signing of the "Declaration for Responsible and Sustainable Principles of China’s Platinum Jewellery Industry." The agreement was signed by notable organizations, including the National Gems & Jewellery Testing Co Ltd. (NGTC) and the National Standardisation Technical Committee 256 on Jewellery of SAC (SAC/TC 256).
PGI China’s Managing Director, Pui P. Poon, opened the forum with a speech that emphasized the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in creating a healthier industry ecosystem. She stressed the need for proactive steps to build a more sustainable future for the jewellery sector.
The forum also featured a global panel of industry leaders, including Edward Johnson, Corporate Responsibility Director at Gemfields Group; Iris Van der Veken, Executive Director of the Watch and Jewellery Initiative 2030; Jon Key, Managing Director of Key & Co.; Dr. Guido Grohmann, Managing Director of BVSU; and Zhenzhen Liu, PGI Director of Global Corporate Marketing. The discussion, moderated by Tai Wong, PGI’s Director of Global Innovation and Product Development, explored key themes such as the need for innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity in the jewellery industry.
Panelists emphasized the importance of setting clear standards for production and operations, as well as embedding sustainable practices through technological advancements. The forum also highlighted platinum's unique qualities—not only as a precious and rare metal but also for its environmental benefits, such as its role in reducing emissions in automotive catalysts.
In 2024, PGI took a significant step toward sustainability by launching the ‘Responsibly Mined Platinum’ casting grain, developed in partnership with Anglo American and US manufacturer Stuller, further reinforcing its commitment to responsible platinum sourcing and use in jewellery.
