Introducing the Fabergé x Gemfields Malaika Egg

The name 'Malaika' translates to 'angel' in Swahili, reflecting the profound connection to Mozambique, where the exquisite rubies adorning this masterpiece were ethically sourced from the Montepuez ruby mine. Crafted from these rare, deep red gems and set in 18k rose gold, the egg features a harmonious blend with white and brown diamonds, pink sapphires, amethysts, and pearls. Expertly handcrafted by skilled artisans in England, employing time-honoured techniques, the Fabergé x Gemfields Malaika Egg exemplifies unparalleled artistry.

The exterior of the egg pays homage to Mozambican rubies, with their fiery brilliance and accented with guilloché enamel, resembling the delicate feathers of an angel's wings. Intricately designed gaps within the pattern offer a tantalizing glimpse of a hidden Fabergé surprise within. Complementing the 308 rubies are 4,312 round brilliant-cut white diamonds, 252 brown diamonds, 421 pink sapphires, and 61 amethysts, all meticulously set in 18k rose gold—a material synonymous with Fabergé's historical opulence.

Guilloché enamel, a technique perfected by Peter Carl Fabergé, involves meticulously applying powdered glass to metal surfaces, creating a translucent effect that enhances the egg's radiant beauty. This craftsmanship, requiring precision and years of expertise, underscores Fabergé's commitment to timeless artistry.

True to Fabergé's legacy of surprises, the Malaika Egg conceals a hidden gem: a five-carat Mozambican ruby ensconced within a rose gold filigree sphere. Operated by turning a pearl ring at its base, the egg's 'wings' gracefully unfurl, unveiling this precious ruby that can be admired within the piece or removed for bespoke jewellery creations.

Antony Lindsay, CEO of Fabergé, remarks, "Colour is at the heart of Fabergé's DNA, and the Malaika Egg exemplifies our dedication to crafting with the finest gemstones. We are proud to support Gemfields' commitment to responsible sourcing, ensuring that every gem benefits its place of origin."

Elena Basaglia, Gemfields’ Head of Partnerships and Product – Downstream, praises the ruby's unique qualities, noting its vibrant red hue and flawless clarity, making it a standout addition to the Malaika Egg.

Discovered in 2009, the Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique, owned by Gemfields, has not only become a significant global supplier but also a catalyst for positive change. Revenues generated are reinvested locally, funding schools, healthcare initiatives, and vocational training, aligning with Gemfields' ethos of creating lasting community benefits.

Beyond its aesthetic allure, the Malaika Egg embodies a charitable spirit, with Fabergé pledging $100,000 to the Gemfields Foundation from its sale. Established in 2019, this UK-registered charity collaborates with Gemfields to spearhead poverty-alleviation projects, fostering sustainable development in African mining communities.

The Fabergé x Gemfields Malaika Egg is available for $1,200,000/£960,000, including the charitable pledge to the Gemfields Foundation.
