This is the sixth diamond over 1,000 carats recovered from the mine since its opening in 2012, reinforcing Karowe’s reputation for yielding large, high-quality gems.
The discovery follows the recovery of a colossal 2,492-carat diamond less than a month ago, the second-largest diamond ever found. Lucara expressed its excitement over this latest find, which will be polished by HB Antwerp as part of an ongoing partnership. The Vancouver-based miner noted that this new gem shares similarities with a 692-carat diamond recovered in August 2023, which was also polished by HB Antwerp and sold for over $13 million.
William Lamb, President and CEO of Lucara, highlighted the significance of these finds, stating, "These continued discoveries of large, high-value diamonds demonstrate the consistent quality of our resource and its ability to deliver substantial returns."
Lucara is also expanding the Karowe mine to underground operations, which is expected to extend its lifespan to at least 2040.
