A delegation from the Botswana High Commission in India visited the city, meeting with representatives of the Surat Diamond Association (SDA) on Wednesday, along with diamond unit owners. The delegation included Botswana High Commissioner Gilbert Shimane Mangole and Dipopego Julius Tsheko, Director of International Business at the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre.

During their visit, the Botswana officials informed SDA members that the Botswana government plans to increase its share in rough diamond mining in the future. The government aims to enhance cutting and polishing capabilities and create more employment opportunities, with a focus on developing the jewellery manufacturing sector.

The Botswana delegation extended an invitation to diamond unit owners to establish their operations in Botswana, offering opportunities for participation in auctions and direct sales of rough diamonds within the country.

However, diamond unit owners from Surat raised concerns about safety and security in Botswana, citing incidents of theft and robbery. Health services were also mentioned as a potential issue. "Incidents of theft and loot are a concern for diamond units. Health services are also a concern," said one diamond unit owner.

An SDA official commented on the Botswana government's incentives, noting, "The Botswana government is offering various benefits to diamond units if they start operations there. However, this could result in job losses for our local workforce. They have made offers in the past as well, but the response has been limited."

Prior to this meeting, the Botswana delegation also met with officials from the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) to explore various trade opportunities.
