The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has scheduled its GemFest Hong Kong for September 23, 2009, with lectures by two preeminent GIA researchers. The event is being held in sync with the forthcoming Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair and at the at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre,
One lecture titled -Red, Hot, and Rare – GIA on Pink-Red Diamonds will be presented by Dr. Wuyi Wang, director of Research and Development, GIA Laboratory New York. He will speak on the Institute’s latest observations, findings on one of the hottest coloured diamonds in the marketplace today, the colour origin of pink-red diamonds, most commonly used treatments to enhance colour, and GIA’s standards to distinguish between natural, treated and synthetic varieties.
The second lecture will be on Corundum – How GIA Determines Country-of-Origin to be presented by Kenneth Scarratt, managing director of GIA Southeast Asia and director of the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok. He will speak on corundum, its origin directly impacting price and why obtaining an independent laboratory report is critical before buying or selling this gemstone. Those attending the presentation will be informed on GIA’s on-going research in determining country-of-origin and how these research findings ensure the accuracy and consistency of its ruby, sapphire and emerald reports.
