Venus Jewels has introduced spread/weight ratio of a diamond within its proprietary Venus Grading System (VGS), and currently offers it for round diamonds. It is conducting research for other shapes. The company believes spread/weight ratio is also an important factor to consider during purchase of diamonds, along with parameters of diamond size.

Anil D. Shah – Partner of Venus Jewel says, “Our ongoing innovative approach to business has helped us to consider “Spread ratio (weight ratio)” as an important parameter, and our quest for transparent business practices has resulted in us disclosing this in our Venus Grading Report (VGR). It certainly affects the appearance of the diamond based on its diameter and weight, and hence should affect its pricing. Along with Spread ratio, if we as an industry can develop a mechanism to evaluate the “fire of a diamond”, then I strongly believe that these two parameters together could revolutionise the definition of 4C’s.”

The spread/weight ratio is an industry term referring to a diamond’s face up size compared to its weight. It becomes an accurate indicator to know if a diamond carries more or less weight than required, for a given diameter, which in turn affects its price. It is actually the most significant of the “cut” parameters as with the spread ratio alone one can easily judge how well a diamond has been cut. Theoretically, a standard or ideal Round Brilliant weighing 1.00 Ct would have a diameter of 6.47mm which would indicate “zero spread”. A negative spread would indicate a diamond weight (in % terms) that was in excess of what it ideally should be, and a positive spread would demonstrate the weight was less than it should be in relation to its diameter.

The company has outlined benefits of “Spread / Weight ratio” as a parameter in Diamond Purchase, including: - Detailed information on the actual size and diameter of the diamond, which will directly impact price. Two diamonds with similar parameters but with different spread will be different in price. By considering overall weight and the diameter, one can focus less on parameters such as Girdle depth, Crown depth and Crown angle. If the weight is more or less than it should be, it will be reflected in the “spread”, making it a logical parameter for the diamond buyer. A diamond with ideal spread will have better light performance and scintillation. “Spread” gives the buyer a better understanding as to how well the diamond has been cut and therefore its value.
