The visitor began their search with wet sifting but switched to surface searching after several hours. While walking near the North Wash pavilion, they noticed something sparkling on the ground, which turned out to be a diamond.
Park staff confirmed the discovery—a silvery-white gem with a round, pitted surface. Though it initially appears brown due to inclusions, closer inspection reveals a clear white exterior. Park Interpreter Sarah Reap noted the finder’s calm demeanor when presenting the diamond, which weighs over two carats.
This find is the third diamond over two carats registered at the park this year, adding to the 548 diamonds found in 2024 so far. Crater of Diamonds State Park is known for its regular diamond discoveries, with one to two gems uncovered daily.
