The three diamond mines in Canada’s Northwest Territories—Rio Tinto’s Diavik, De Beers/Mountain Province’s Gahcho Kué, and Burgundy Diamond Mines’ Ekati—have collaborated to create an extraordinary pendant featuring diamonds from each of their operations. Designed by Adamas Diamonds, the piece symbolizes the northern heritage and community spirit of the NWT, incorporating diamonds in a caribou antler motif and set in 18-karat white gold. The pendant includes a 0.41-carat round brilliant-cut Ekati diamond, a 0.51-carat radiant-cut Gahcho Kué diamond, and a 0.41-carat round brilliant-cut Diavik diamond, with an appraised value exceeding CAD $12,000.
The pendant will be auctioned at the 2024 MAX Awards on November 28 in Yellowknife during the Yellowknife Geoscience Forum, with all proceeds supporting the Yellowknife Community Fundraising Club’s Adopt-A-Family program. This initiative provides essential items and holiday gifts for local families in need.
Matthew Breen, COO of Diavik Diamond Mine, emphasized the pendant’s design as a testament to the region’s land, culture, and wildlife, and its role in supporting community. Avischen Moodley, Country President of De Beers Canada, highlighted the importance of the caribou motif, symbolic of the connection the NWT people have with the land. Burgundy Diamond Mines’ Vice-President of Operations, Jeff Reinson, noted the pendant’s representation of northern beauty and the shared commitment of the mines to community welfare and environmental stewardship.
Kathy Gray, a spokesperson for the MAX Awards, expressed gratitude to the mines for their contribution to the auction, stating that the proceeds will have a significant impact on the Adopt-A-Family program’s ability to support local families this holiday season.
