Belgium’s polished diamond exports up 23% in April

In April 2013, Belgium noted a rise in value of its polished diamond exports, which increased 23 percent (on y-o-y basis) to $1.157 billion, but a drop of 9 percent in the volume of the said exports to 533,128.25 carats. The average price of diamonds rose 36 percent to $2,170.60 per carat.

Imports of polished diamonds were up 8 percent to $1.009 billion. The net polished exports (excess of exports over imports), increased $147 million (the same was $11.5 million in April 2012).

Imports of rough diamonds rose 38 percent to 1.422 billion, while rough diamond exports rose 28 percent to $1.528 billion. The net rough imports ( rough imports less exports), stood in a deficit by $105 million (deficit of $167 million in April 2012).

The net diamond account for April (valued as total rough and polished exports less total imports) increased 42 percent to $253 million.
