Retail sales in India seem to be on the upswing during the ongoing Christmas season, reflecting a positive economic sentiment for retailers across the country, reports add. The product categories that stood out as the most popular buyers’ choices included jewellery, perfumes, apparel, toys and gifts, Christmas decorations and confectioneries, reports add.

Leading retailers have noted a 22 percent rise in sales year-on-year, and some product categories reflecting a 60 percent rise, in December, reports say. India’s GDP growth, which had slackened to 6.7 percent last fiscal year has bounced back to 7.9 percent at the end of the quarter ending in September.

The country’s retail season has been on the upswing since Diwali and is expected to be so until early-January, reports say.
