During his address as the keynote speaker at the First International Conference on Jewelry, which is being held in Peru, Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri, president of CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, advised the leaders of the Peruvian jewellery sector, to adopt strict standards of Corporate Social Responsibility in order that they be properly integrated in the global market. "In the modern business environment, there are essentially three rules of practice that we have to follow, in order to show ourselves to be a responsible business sector," he said. "The first is to be fully transparent in the way we operate our businesses and what we sell. The second is to defend the industry from the various challenges that could threaten our reputation and integrity. The third is to function as a positive influence, serving as a means for sustainable economic and social development in the communities and countries in which we are active."

The audience of the Peruvian jewellery sector was gathered to discuss the measures necessary to expand the capacity and output of their industry. Dr. Cavalieri added saying "With Peru's natural wealth of silver and gold, it was inevitable that a legacy of jewellery production would develop in your country. But while you play a very prominent role as a producer of precious metals, you clearly have been less successful in penetrating the major consumer markets for fine jewellery.” He further added "It is important to stress that you are not in this business alone. In fact, if you wish to succeed in the jewellery business today, you need to connect to an international community that stretches literally across the globe, all the way from the mine to the retail jewellery market.”

During his week-long visit to Peru, Dr. Cavalieri has met with a host of government leaders, including Peruvian President Alan Garcia Perez, Peruvian Prime Minister Yehude Simon, and Javier Velásquez, the president of the Peruvian Congress.
