As mentioned in a press release, the International Gemological Institute (IGI) was recently highlighted in an ABC News NIGHTLINE segment on consumers selling jewellery for cash. The segment entitled “Fools Gold” aired on Thursday, March 5, 2009, and focused primarily on consumers selling jewellery to Cash4Gold.com and included on-site footage of IGI’s New York laboratory. IGI President and CEO Jerry Ehrenwald, G.G., A.S.A., was featured as an independent expert.

Ehrenwald, who is frequently quoted in the consumer media and used as a resource for stories related to diamonds, gemstones and fine jewellery, advised consumers on precautions they should take before sending jewellery to companies like Cash4Gold, and while selling sentimental articles. The segment specifically referenced IGI’s Precious Metal Calculator, which assists consumers in calculating the melt value of their jewellery based on the current fix prices for precious metals (including gold and platinum).
